Raksha Bandhan, a cherished festival that honors the deep bond between brothers and sisters, will be celebrated this year on Saturday, 9th August 2025. The festival falls on the Purnima (Full Moon) of the Shukla Paksha in the holy month of Shravan, as per the Hindu calendar.
On this auspicious day, sisters tie a Raksha Sutra or Rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, praying for their long life, happiness, and protection from negativity. In return, brothers vow to protect their sisters, accepting the Rakhi as a sacred symbol of love, responsibility, and commitment.
Traditional Rituals of Raksha Bandhan
Before the Rakhi is tied, certain Vedic rituals are performed to purify the surroundings and invite divine blessings:
- A Swastika symbol is drawn on both sides of the main entrance using red roli or red ochre (geru).
- The names of Radha and Krishna are written near or above the Swastika symbols.
- Sweets are offered to the Swastika and the deities as part of the puja.
- Holy water from a copper vessel is sprinkled around the home to cleanse and sanctify the space.
- Only after these spiritual preparations is the Rakhi tying ceremony performed.
Important Tip: Rakhi should never be tied during Bhadra Kaal or Rahu Kaal, as these periods are considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology.
The Power of the Raksha Mantra
When a Brahmin priest ties a Raksha Sutra to a devotee (Yajman), he chants a powerful Raksha Mantra, which translates to:
“I tie you with the same sacred thread that once bound the mighty demon king Bali.
O Raksha Sutra, stay firm and unwavering in your purpose.”
This mantra is a symbolic invocation of divine protection and a reminder to uphold Dharma (righteousness). The Raksha Sutra is more than just a thread—it is a spiritual shield, instilling strength, responsibility, and protection against negative influences.
Auspicious Rakhi Colors Based on Zodiac Signs
Choosing a Rakhi thread that aligns with your zodiac sign is believed to enhance the protective and spiritual energy of the Raksha Sutra. Here’s the ideal color for each Rashi:

| Aries | Red |
| Taurus | Pink |
| Gemini | Green |

| Leo | Red or Maroon |
| Virgo | Green |
| Libra | Pink |
| Scorpio | Red or Maroon |
| Sagittarius | Yellow |

Selecting the right color based on your Rashi can help draw positive vibrations, reduce challenges, and enhance inner peace and emotional strength.
